Since Britain voted to leave the EU, the exact impact Brexit will have on our lives continues to be hotly debated.
One of the key worries since the referendum has been how it affects travel and British expats living in one of the other 27 EU countries – of which there are 1.2million.
After the vote, the Passport Index – which monitors the “power” of 199 passports across the world – has indicated the British passport could see its stock fall greatly.
“In the worst case scenario, we estimate that the British passport’s ranking will fall drastically to 26th place, with a visa-free score of 123,” Hrant Boghossian, of the organisation, told Yahoo! News.
“Put in perspective, the UK passport will be as powerful as the one from Saint Kitts & Nevis and weaker than that of Antigua & Barbuda.”
Here we look at how passports are currently ranked…
10. The Netherlands – visa-free access to 156 countries
The Netherlands has the same score as their Belgian neighbors, with identical access across the globe.
9. Italy – visa-free access to 156 countries
Another EU country, but Italy has a slightly better score than the Netherlands given its visa-free access to Vietnam and Turkey.
8. Denmark – visa-free access to 156 countries
The Scandinavian country has an almost identical score to other European countries, given its place in the EU, but ranks slightly above Italy on the Passport Index.
7. United Kingdom – visa-free access to 157 countries
“The British passport ranking will most certainly fall but how far depends on the [Brexit] negotiations,” says the Passport Index. “The EU will not go easy on the UK and we expect harsh measures to be set in place.”
6. Spain – visa-free access to 157 countries
The UK and Spain have a similar ranking on the Passport Index, but certain discrepancies exist – such as access to Iran and the United Arab Emirates, meaning Spain comes out just on top.
